How to get your full deposit back

Deposits are a hot topic for all tenants, and rightly so. How can you ensure you get yours back in full? One of the most important things, says Maxine, is thoroughly checking the inventory when you check in, before you’ve moved your stuff in. Cross-check it with the property itself. Anything that doesn’t seem right, query it with your letting agent or landlord.

You have a responsibility to look after the rental property, but your letting agent will use their common sense when it comes to what constitutes fair wear and tear. Particularly if you’ve been living in the property a while, some deterioration of particular items or furniture is expected and allowed. Always ensure there’s a professional inventory at check in and check out, and examine it closely.
